A word from Gladys DeVilliers

Welcome to my page dedicated to genealogy and a variety of related files,
pertaining to the search for, and preservation of, our heritage.

I have granted Lucie LeBlanc Consentino, owner of the Acadian Ancestral Home permission to post my work on this site.

The Breaux family, expelled from Acadia, made their way to Louisiana and established a bridge not only from the past to the future, but with a physical reminder arching over Bayou Teche, and in the name of a city. As with so many of their compatriots, they made a life for themselves along the banks of Bayou Teche in the Southwestern part of the state. Their legacy is not only the innumerable citizens of the United states who bear their name, but also the town of Breaux Bridge, now known as the Crawfish Capital of the World, in St. Martin Parish.

While this page on the Louisiana Breaux family is not complete as to descendants, I believe that it will afford a roadway, or map, for those who wish to pursue their research beyond this. The information is based on my own research for various purposes including the Centennial Edition of the St. Martinville Teche News; for my book, The Opelousas Post; my two genealogical columns, Twig by Twig and Relatively Speaking; and the works of the late Donald Hebert. The names are organized into family groups as that was the way I compiled them in the beginning and I do not have the time nor the patience to rearrange them. Each family group consists of the earliest mention of a couple. Their Children are listed with them in the group, but then are listed as the heads of another group, alphabetically by first name, if they married. If I could not place a certain person in a group, I listed him/her separately. It should also be noted that since my research was divided into families, the entries are by that name only. However, I did add the parents of the spouses so that it would open a passage into that family.

When I ran into a problem that I could not resolve, I added notes at that Point; i.e. when I happened on a birth that could not be placed to a certain couple, or when information in different records seemed to conflict.

I have such files on many, many families and I will be adding them as fast as I can. I will also add to the files which I have already on line, so this is an on-going process. Please check often.

The information I upload into these pages are all the research I have in my files and I could therefore not elaborate any further or answer any questions. I encourage each of you to undertake or to complete your own searches wherever this may take you.

Listed below this line are miscellaneous Angelles for whom I could find no definitive place. Perhaps someone somewhere has the missing pieces. If you do, would you please send me the information so I can update my data bank? Please quote your sources.

There are contradictions concerning the deaths of Firmin Breaux and Marguerite Breaux, and because there has been perhaps more specialized research in that area than what I did, I only present the versions and their sources here. I leave it to members of the family to decide which is right.

St. Martin de Tours Church records in St. Martinville who that ÒFirmin, of Acadia, living on Bayou Teych, died 1 Oct. 1808 at his residence and was buried 2 Oct. 1808 at age 60 years.Ó Witnesses to the death were Michel Martin and Joseph Babin, fils. Father Gabriel Isabey entered the act in v. 4, #534. A succession, #38, is dated 30 Jan. 1809, at the St. Martin Parish Courthuse. There is no spouse, nor children listed in either of these acts.

On 2 May 1814, another succession, #156, is filed at the courthouse, showing Firmin as the widower of Marguerite Braud. Children listed are Donat, Pierre, Francois, Baptiste, Joseph, Agricole, Scholastique married Cyrille Thibodeau; Marie married Jean Guidry; Isabelle married Louis Bonin; Felicite married Athanas Hebert; Modeste married Benjamin Bonin; Adelaide married Sylvestre Broussard.

Entry #980 in v. 4 of St. Martin de Tours records, shows that Marguerite Breaux, ñnative of Acadie, widow of Firmin Brad.î died 1 Sept. 1815 at the home of Cyrille Thibaudot at la grand pointe. She was 68 years old. She was buried 2 Sept. 1815 in the parish cemetery. The act was signed by Cyrille Thibodeau and Fr. Gabriel Isabey.

Either church record and first succession are dated wrong and this is another Firmin, or the wife of the later one is mid-identified as Marguerite Breaux.
Jean Bapiste Breaux of Cabanassee parish, living at La grande pointe sur le Bayou, died 17 Dec. 1806 at home, buried 18 Dec. 1806 at age 30 yrs. Fr. Gabriel Isabey (SM Ch.: v.4, #451)

Firmin Breaux arrived in the Attakapas District in 1765, and eventually settled near LaPointe near the bends of the Bayou Teche in the Upper St. Martin Parish. The area is now known as Breaux Bridge -- his namesake.

Firmin's family first settled in Boston in 1755 after their deportation from Nova Scotia, but secured permission to move back to Canada in 1767. However Firmin had evidently decided to leave the Boston area and his family while still a young man of 17 to follow Jean-Batiste Broussard and the first Acadian settlers of Louisiana to the Attakapas County. He did not return to Canada.

The Spanish census of 1766 lists Broussard and 15 other Acadian householders as having established their farms and homes at Quartier de la Pointe, the area of a point along the Bayou Teche). It lists Firmin as a bachelor at Bayou Tortue, southwest of Breaux Bridge. His name later appears in 1769 as a householder in the census of the District of Cabahanoce (St. James Parish), married to Marguerite Braud, then on the membership of the Attakapas militia in 1777. He is next listed in the Attakapas District's census of 1781 as the head of a household of nine individuals with 153 animals and 25 arpents of cultivated or cleared land.

By 1786, according to Geneva Bailey Seymour's genelogical study of the Breaux, Firmin lived at the west end of the bridge which spans bayou Teche in Breaux Bridge, and owned a much larger tract extending from "Bayou Vermillion all the way to the 40-arpent road east of the bayou (Teche)" until he died in 1808.

Firmin's large tract, Seymour wrote, was part of a 92-arpent tract extending from Bayou Vermillion to the 40-arpent road east of the Teche which was originaily grantea to jean-Francois Ledee by the Spanish government. There is evidence that Ledee eventually divided the land into lots and sold it to several Acadian farmers, Sugarcane and cotton were the primary crops and the fertile bayou lands began drawing more and more settlers to the area.

In a 1983 interview with the Teche News, Grover Rees, a descendant of Firmin Breaux and David Rees, said that according to an 1829 map showing Breaux Bridge as 'Ila ville du pont de Breaux," meaning more than one Breaux, the original bridge for which the town was named was built by Firmin and one of his sons, (Agricole or Joseph), connecting their properties on the east and west sides of the bayou. The U. S., Survey Map 1816 indicates a bridge connecting Firmin's property to that of his son Joseph. The area was referred to as Pont Breaux at that time.

Agricole, the son of Pierre Firmin, was born March 11, 1788 at Breaux bridge. It was he who gave a lot at the corner of the present Bridge and Rees Streets in Breaux Bridge for a public school. A statue of his widow, Scholastique Picou, was recently commissioned by the town fathers.
